One Valued Employee is Back to Work
Coppola & Sons Construction Company, Inc. builds exquisite masonry for high-end homes, commercial properties and universities in the Fairfield county area.
Company founder Emilio Coppola began as an apprentice at age 13 in San Mango Sul Calore, Italy, before emigrating to America in 1959 and opening his own business in 1973. Emilio’s sons, Joseph and Robert, joined the firm in 1990 to help grow the business.
Joe Coppola first connected with the Connecticut Small Business Development Center (CTSBDC) March 27, 2014, when he met CTSBDC business advisor Jenefeness Houston at a WCBS Newsradio 880 Small Business Breakfast in Stamford, CT. That same day Joe requested business advising, and he and Jenefeness met a few days later to discuss working capital needs as well as help with rehiring employees who’d been let go during the recent recession.
Jenefeness introduced Joe to three government programs that could assist him with re-hiring his employees along with wage-reimbursement, tax subsidies and/or on the job training assistance. He was especially interested in Connecticut’s Subsidized Training and Employment (Step Up) program. Working together, Joe and Jenefeness contacted program coordinator Carmen Nieves who explained the details and emailed everything needed to process the application. Joe responded the next day, and within one business day was approved for an $11,500 reimbursement of wages for an employee, who started work within a week’s time.
“This is a great story,” Joe stated, “because Step Up rapidly helped one of my employees get back to work, earning a paycheck and providing for his family. I commend Jenefeness for all of her expertise, and excellent coaching and assistance!”
“What thrilled me most about Carmen and the state’s Step Up program was the fast turnaround time, plus the fact that Joe contacted us and had results so quickly,” Jenefeness explained. “It’s a testament to how Connecticut programs and CTSBDC can collaborate and help small businesses like Coppola & Sons access the services they need to grow and thrive.”
Joe and Jenefeness continue to work together to complete an application for the Small Business Express Program loan to help support and grow the business.Go Back
